Speak Up at the Back, There!
As previously announced, our new programme of quarterly meetings, devised and co-ordinated by Kathy Wholley, kicks off at 7.15 p.m. on Wednesday 23 November in the Hall at Greneway School with an evening workshop on voice production and projection. This will be led by Sandra Birnie of Cambridge drama group Bawds and promises to be both entertaining and instructive, particularly for those involved in the current show! Please note that places are strictly limited to 20 for this workshop, that there is a lower age limit of 15, and that there is a small entry fee (to be paid on the night) of £5 to cover expenses and the hire of the hall. Kathy would also like to let people know in advance that the workshop will involve some lying on the floor, so you are advised either to bring a mat of some sort (such as a yoga mat) or to be prepared to sit out of that part of the session.
Because places are limited, we should appreciate it if you could book your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment – please contact Kathy on 01763 223805 (or e-mail kjw47@cam.ac.uk). Note that the priority booking period for CADS regulars ends on 31 October, but that if there are still places available at the beginning of November, the workshop will be opened up to others.
The Play’s the Thing
The CADS Play Reading Group meets this month at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 15 November at 36 Orchard Road, Royston, when it will be hosted by Michael Young. The group works like a book group with the host providing tea, coffee, biscuits and so on, and choosing a play that they think would be interesting, stimulating, or simply fun to read in a “round the room” format. So far we’ve read extracts from a variety of plays including The Servant With Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, Pack of Lies by Hugh Whitemore, and Speaking in Tongues by Andrew Bovell (the play on which the brilliant Australian movie Lantana was based) – all very different plays but all thoroughly entertaining.
As before, Michael has asked that people let him know if possible that they will be attending as, if the numbers are too great, the event may need to be moved to a larger venue. You can contact him at michaelyoung@hewitsons.com or ring 01763 223805. We look forward to seeing a good turnout (did we mention the tea and biscuits?).
The Return of Bert and Ernie!
Yes, those two stalwart (if strangely mute) regulars of CADS pantomimes, Bert and Ernie, will – we understand –be making a welcome return in the 2012 Royston Town Pantomime - Knight Fever! An Arthurian Panto by Damian Trasler, David Lovesy and Steve Clark. Sadly, original co-director Jenn Groves has had to withdraw from the production following an accident – we all wish her as speedy recovery - leaving Bernie Parsons (director of Earnest and co-director of this year’s record-breaking Jack and the Beanstalk) to take on the directorial role single-handed, aided and abetted, of course, by our brilliant musical director Louise Atkins.
Tickets for the show will be going on sale, as is traditional, at the Greneway Christmas Market which this year is on Sunday 20 November; they will also be on sale the following Sunday, 27 November, at Meridian School’s Christmas Fair, and members of the group will be out in the cold (as it will almost certainly be to judge from previous years!) promoting the show at the Royston Christmas Carnival on Sunday 4 December. If you’re willing to volunteer to help out at any of these events, please contact one of the committee (contact details are at the end of this newsletter) but in any case, if you’re planning to visit one of them, do at least drop by and say hello!
Tickets, by the way, are priced at £9 (£7 concessions) as before, but this year we’re introducing a special opening night deal whereby all seats cost just £7, so book early to take advantage of this offer!
Incidentally, if you’d like to get involved in the show, whether as part of the technical crew, or the front of house team, or helping with costumes and make-up, there’s still an opportunity to do so and we can always do with more volunteers! Please contact producer Pauline Rowe on 01763 231749 or e-mail pauline.rowe@talk21.com.
